Franschhoek Wine Tram

Franschhoek Wine Tram

Franschhoek Wine Tram

For the perfect start to your day with us, arrive at either The Franschhoek or Groot Drakenstein Terminal (dependent on which tour / line you choose), and grab a coffee and Beignet – our trademark, classic French pastry! Feel free to browse our various merchandise items while waiting for your experience to begin.

Our most popular option, the Hop-on Hop-off Experience, allows you to do just that – hop on and off as you like, experiencing the different activities on offer, be it wine tasting, a cellar tour, lunch or just a stroll through the vineyards. And when you’re ready, simply hop-on to continue your journey.

Take your pick between 5 different lines, each visiting a selection of wine estates showcasing a separate part of the Franschhoek Valley.

The Hop-on Hop-off experience allows you to curate and plan your own day. You get to choose how long you spend at each spot (within the line schedule, of course), where you eat, where you drink, and the activities you partake in.

Your experience begins at either the Franschhoek Terminal or the Groot Drakenstein Terminal (depending on the line), where you can grab a coffee, beignet and browse our merchandise while waiting for your journey to start.

From the terminals, you will be transported around your selected line’s loop of stops on a combination of double-decker tram and open-air tram-bus, allowing you to disembark when you like.

  • Bookings open to adults and kids (kids under three go free).
  • Lines depart between 08:45am & 13:00pm (check the terminal of departure for the specific line).
  • Visit a number of wine estates over the course of a day. We suggest 3-4 wineries when starting with one of the earlier departures.
  • Includes a narration focusing on the history of Franschhoek and wine cultivation in the valley.
  • Curate your day around your preferences.
  • Plan and book your own tastings, activities and dining. Tastings, lunch and other activities will be for your account and can be settled with each winery directly.
  • Wine purchased while on the tour can be handed to one of our staff members for safekeeping and collected at the end of your tour. Ask one of our friendly Ticket Office staff members about our Totebag charity initiative which includes great discounts for purchasing wines at participating wineries.

Everything you need to know to be fully prepared for your day trip on the Franschhoek Wine Tram.

PICKING A LINE Before choosing a line, read about the estates and the activities they offer. Consult the timetable of the line you wish to travel on, and plan your day around this timetable. Keep in mind that you would not be able to visit all the estates on each line. Remember that not all wine estates are located next to the railway tracks – we make use of an open-sided bus to travel to these estates.

BOOKING YOUR TICKETS Book your tickets in advance, especially if you want to travel on a specific line and depart at a specific time. You can book online right here.

BOOKING YOUR DINING Planning on having lunch or a picnic at an estate? Phone the estate and book in advance. Some restaurants might be closed on the day of your tour. Click here for a list of restaurants with contact details.

BOOKING YOUR TRANSFER To avoid having to driving home after your tour, include a transfer with your booking and make sure that you include your address for your private chauffeur pick-up.

PARKING If you’re driving to Franschhoek, park at the Franschhoek Terminallocated on the corner of Main Road and Cabriere Street, or make use of the parking at our Groot Drakenstein Terminal if you are travelling on our navy and orange lines and prefer to depart from there.

COLLECTING YOUR TICKETS Collect your tickets at least 15 minutes before the tour starts from the ticket office at the Franschhoek Terminal.

If you’re travelling on the navy and orange lines, you have the option of collecting your tickets and commencing the tour at our Groot Drakenstein Terminal, located on the corner of the R45 and R310 roads. For example, if you book for 09:05 am Navy Line your tour will only depart from Groot Drakenstein Terminal at 09:35 am.
