Vitosha
The ski zone in the Vitosha Mountains is just under an hour from Sofia (the capital of Bulgaria).
Due to its geographical proximity to the capital, this place is one of the most popular among the locals, so it can get quite crowded on weekends. Intermediate and advanced skiers and snowboarders can choose between a variety of slopes.

At a glance:
-
Slope height above sea level: 1650 m – 2290 m
-
Total length: 20 km
-
the longest slope: 3.1 km
-
Number of lifts: 12
There are practically two ski centers in the Vitosha Mountains: “Aleko” and “Konjarnika – Vetrovala”. The ski zone around Aleko is 1800 m above sea level and offers particularly good opportunities for snowboarders, as the Vitosha Mountains around this area hosted the national snowboard championship in 2007 and the open state snowboard championship in 2008 was also held here.
The second ski centre called Konjarnika – Vetrovala is 1507 m above sea level and also has slopes of all levels of difficulty. The best thing to do is to simply try out both ski centres and decide for yourself which one is most suitable for someone personally.
Cool thing: the use of just one ski pass for all ski areas in the Vitosha Mountains is extremely cheap for all winter sports fans.
By the way: in all Vitosha ski areas, individual and group lessons are offered in several languages. Here you can also rent your ski equipment. There are also special courses for children to get to know the world of winter sports.
What else is up
In addition to sports activities on the slopes, Vitosha also offers other interesting experiences: the highest peak is called Tscherni vrah, which can also be climbed in winter. The hike to the summit takes a day and is relatively easy. Tcherni vrah is 2290 m high and is definitely recommended – this is where the beauty of the mountains reveals itself (also outside the ski zones). Important: don’t forget your camera ????

Within the mountains is the Vitoscha Nature Park – the oldest on the Balkan Peninsula. Its close proximity to the capital makes it one of the favourite destinations for mountain and nature lovers. Here you will find a variety of plant and animal species that are relatively rare or unfortunately endangered. The nature park is very accessible to tourists thanks to the network of paths and routes, youth hostels, lifts and recreational facilities. A trip to this park is particularly recommended in summer.
