Tegernsee

The most beautiful places on and around the Tegernsee

The Tegernsee Valley attracts many visitors year after year and inspires them again and again. The combination of lake, mountains and the unique way of life in the places around the Tegernsee make the Tegernsee valley a unique travel destination.

Vacation spots on the Tegernsee

Bad Wiessee – therapeutic bath at the Tegernsee

Bad Wiessee is a place for the whole family that shines with a wide range of leisure, wellness and sports offers. With the discovery of the iodine-sulfur spring in 1922, the place was awarded the title “Bad”. Since then, an exclusive wellness and health infrastructure has developed in Bad Wiessee .

Play instead of spa is the motto in Bavaria’s most modern casino. You can try your luck in a stylish atmosphere. On the other hand, the golf course, which is one of the most demanding in Upper Bavaria, requires athletic skill . Due to the unique view of the lake, it is also one of the most beautiful.

Tegernsee

The five-kilometer traffic-free lake promenade is ideal for walks, jogging, inline skating or cycling. In the Aquadome, a freshwater aquarium, young and old get to know the fauna and flora of the Tegernsee. In the indoor sports and play arena, the focus is more on playing and romping around.

Gmund – gate to the Tegernsee

Gmund is located on the northern bank of the Tegernsee and is often referred to as the “gateway to the Tegernsee”. The family-friendly community with around 6,000 inhabitants is best known for its holidays on the old farms .

The scenic beauty of the slightly hilly foothills of the Alps is ideal for hiking, walking and cycling. Bavarian cosiness and lived customs characterize this place. The former Federal Chancellor and Minister of Economics, Ludwig Erhardt, already enjoyed the peace and quiet here. He spent the last few years here and was also buried here.

Because of the paper mills Louistenthal and handmade paper, the community of Gmund gained international fame. The former produces banknotes for domestic and foreign customers, the latter has been producing the finest paper for 175 years. From Munich you can reach the train station in Gmund every hour.

Kreuth – southernmost municipality on the Tegernsee

The 17 districts of the southernmost municipality of the Tegernsee Valley extend deep into the mountains. The Austrian border is right behind the Achenpass. The climatic health resort of Kreuth offers a wide range of sports and leisure activities due to its location.

Nestled between Hirschberg, Leonhardstein, Setzberg and the Blauberge, it is the ideal starting point for hikers, mountaineers, mountain bikers or, in winter, for ski and toboggan fans. You can discover rare animals and plants in the Weissach-Aue nature reserve.

Rottach-Egern

The landmark of the village can be seen from afar, the 1,722 meter high Wallberg . The local mountain not only shapes the image of the community and the entire valley, in summer it is the starting point for paragliders, who find ideal wind conditions here.

In winter, ski and toboggan fans will find excellent conditions on the longest natural toboggan run. On foot or with the Wallbergbahn you can get to the top of the mountain, from here you have a wonderful view of the valley and the mountains in the hinterland.

A trip on the lake offers the most beautiful view of the city, of the Malerwinkel . As if painted in a picture, the Egerner church is located directly on the water, surrounded by traditional houses in front of the enthroned Wallberg.

Numerous painters, poets and composers were inspired by the enchanting landscape and the busy and lively life. Today elegant shops, first-class hotels and restaurants shape the picture.

City of Tegernsee

The town of Tegernsee is the oldest settlement on the lake of the same name. The former Benedictine monastery, which stands for the beginning of settlement in the valley, now houses a restaurant and the Herzoglich Bayerische Brauhaus, the oldest brewery in Germany.

The Tegernsee Week and the Tegernsee Volkstheater convey tradition and culture authentically and up close. The annual mountain film festival is a magnet for cineastes from near and far. The conviviality and cosiness is also an important part of the culture. Whether at the traditional forest festival in the butterfly garden, at the annual lake festival or with a beer in the Braustüberl, this is where guests and locals meet.

The only fishery on the lake is based in Tegernsee and supplies the surrounding restaurants with local catches. In addition to fish and beer, the city of Tegernsee also has a sun-drenched beach shore with sports and leisure facilities that either play beach volleyball or invite you to relax and unwind.

Holiday locations not far from the Tegernsee

Bayrischzell – Idyllic mountain village

The climatic health resort of Bayrischzell is located at 1,838 meters above sea level in the Mangfall Mountains, at the foot of the Wendelstein. The idyllic mountain village has 1,700 inhabitants and has made a name for itself especially as a domicile for winter sports enthusiasts.

The townscape is determined by the parish church of St. Margaretha, which rises with its pointed tower above the roofs of the town and has ceiling frescoes that are worth seeing. Anyone who wants to actively relax in Bayrischzell can choose from numerous leisure activities . In summer, the heated outdoor pool is an attraction. Tourists can also prove their skills at mini golf or tennis.

If you want to climb the summit of the Wendelstein, you have the choice of a relaxing hike or a comfortable cable car ride. In the cold season, the community is extremely snow-sure. There are 31 kilometers of slopes for holidaymakers on the Sudelfeldall levels of difficulty available. 19 lifts are in operation until spring and unadulterated skiing fun is guaranteed.

Waakirchen

The municipality of Waakirchen is located in the Miesbach district. The local area is extensive and consists of seven districts and numerous hamlets. The community with a population of 5,600 is centrally located. The shore of the Tegernsee is just five kilometers away.

Numerous historic farmhouses have been preserved in Waakirchen , which impress with their flat saddle roof construction and arcades. The dominant place of worship is the Holy Cross Church. This is where the Schaftlacher Cross, one of the oldest surviving crucifixes in human history, is kept . The work from the 10th century probably comes from the Tegernsee Monastery.

Hausham

The municipality of Hausham is idyllically situated at the foot of the Bavarian Alps. A little more than 8,000 inhabitants live in the village. The location between the villages of Miesbach and Schliersee promotes tourist opportunities, which range from hiking and water sports to skiing.

At the gates of Hausham, the 1,052 meter high Huberspitz rises the local mountain of the village. The headframe of the former coal mine is a landmark of Hausham. The onion dome of the parish church of St. Anton is also visible from afar. The neo-baroque church was consecrated in 1909.

Miesbach

The district town of Miesbach is located in the Oberland region and is known as the cradle of the Bavarian costume movement . Miesbach has a pretty historic old town . The city square, Marienplatz and market square are lined with numerous architectural monuments. The narrow streets invite you to take a leisurely stroll and the numerous fountains are the ideal place for a rest.

Today the Miesbacher costume is representative of the Bavarian costume. Around 50 traditional costume clubs are active in the region and you can meet an above-average number of people wearing traditional costumes at atmospheric folk festivals or church events in the Miesbach area.

Attractions include the parish church of the Assumption, which houses a life-size crucifixion group and historical tombs. A hike to the Stadlberg, the highest point in the city at 924 meters, is well worth it.

Fischbachau

In the district of Miesbach in Upper Bavaria, the municipality of Fischbachau is located with approx. 5,560 inhabitants on an area of 75.91 km². When nature is still waiting sleepily under the snow at the beginning of a new calendar year, the cross-country ski trails, winter carriage rides, ski tours and culinary snowshoe tours offer plenty of variety.

But not only the cold season is a popular holiday time in Fischbachau. When the first flowers bloom and nature slowly awakens, you can experience exactly this awakening on a hike on the many hiking trails or by bike. Family or pleasure hikes are special.

These leisure activities can of course also be pursued in summer, and a visit to the outdoor pools in Fischbachau can also be planned well. With a mountain hike in autumn, you can watch from the mountains how nature slowly settles down again. And so the community offers relaxation and recreation throughout the year in the midst of the unique landscape of the Bavarian Alps.

To reach Tegernsee you are able to fly in to Munich or Memmingen
