LAKE GARDA

Lake Garda or Benaco is the largest in Italy. Its wider part to the south is surrounded by morainic hills that were left following the glacier recession, while the narrow northern part is enclosed by the mountains that createits fjord-shape configuration and provide a very mild Mediterranean climate.

The luminous environment, temperate climate, and flourishing vegetation – mainly olive and lemon groves, palms, cypresses, oleanders and orange trees – along with the majestic landscapes are the background to the remarkable historical and cultural remains spread all around and make this lake the most charming in Italy.

Given the intense colour of its water with a marked shade of blue and matchless transparency, Lake Garda is a unique spot where visitors and guests can enjoy a holiday full of relaxation, sports, fun and the thrill of discovering new places.

Choose the activities you want to do during your holiday on Lake Garda:

WELLNESS & RELAXATION

The magnetic charm and particular climate of Lake Garda make it an ideal place to regain your physical and mental equilibrium and restore your energy, beauty and interior harmony.

The Sirmione Spas, situated on the peninsula of the same name, is one of the most important spa centres in Europe. Due to the precious sulphurous water, containing sodium chloride, bromine and iodine, flowing naturally from the depths of the lake, the Sirmione Spa centres are advanced in the cure of pathologies of the respiratory system, the treatment of rheumatic complaints and motory rehabilitation.

The spa water feeds the “Virgilio” and “Catullo” establishments and a new well-being spa centre, Aquaria, that offers numerous courses for relaxation and beauty treatments.

In the magnificent Garda Thermal Park with sweeping lawns and secular trees, near Colà di Lazise, you can bathe in two pools of thermal water.

Besides the renowned spa centres, there are over 60 hotels on the lakeside sited in magical scenery with wellness centres and/or well-being facilities.

CULTURE

For art and history lovers, Lake Garda offers an attractive leap into the past: medieval villages clustered between walls and towers, and Veronese and Venetian castles recall memorable battles and great leaders. The elegant villas, favoured by royalty and the scene of important historic events, are evidence of wealth and power in times of peace.

In Gargnano the stately “Palazzo Bettoni”, designed in the late 18th century, is one of the most beautiful villas of the lake. The “Vittoriale degli Italiani”, the monumental citadel Gabriele d’Annunzio furnished and lived in during the 1930s in Gardone Riviera, constitutes an extraordinary and insuperable group of buildings, streets, squares, theatres, gardens, parks and streams.

Not to be missed a visit to the remains of the Villa Romana in Sirmione known as the “Grotte di Catullo“, the Latin poet who died in 54 B.C., which is the greatest example of a private building of aristocratic character in the whole of northern Italy.

FOOD & WINE

Three regions overlook Lake Garda, each with their own individual character, landscape and culture, which also influences the local cuisine and food and wine specialities.

The most typical product is the extra virgin olive oil, renowned for its lightness and delicacy, which goes well with freshwater fish from the lake and traditional country dishes of meat and polenta.

The Alto Garda area is home to the unique lemon houses, which cannot be found anywhere else in the world.

The citrus fruits of Lake Garda, are an important ingredient in many local recipes, including Limoncino liqueur and lemon cream of the Riviera dei Limoni, a citron-flavored beverage, and sweets.

An ideal accompaniment to each dish is the excellent wine produced in the Garda vineyards: NosiolaMerlotCabernet and Vino Santo in the northern areas; Classico Groppello della Valtenesi in the southern vineyards of Bardolino and Lugana. Several itineraries wind through the renowned winemaking areas taking you on a journey to discover the flavours and fragrances of the land…
